Curriculum

As Education continues to transform, we help shape the thinkers, the performers and difference-makers to become the best version of themselves. We follow the CAPS curriculum in a supportive and aided class system, which has proven to be extremely successful at Craiglands School over the years. Our timetables have been strategically designed to ensure optimal learning takes place. We follow the required CAPS subject hours as closely as possible while allowing room for enrichment in the learner’s daily schooling.

We pride ourselves on its amazing staff team who support and encourage our learners to become critical thinkers whilst accommodating the needs of each learner. We remain ambitious and continue to extend learning into transformation of academic and cultural activities.

Our school’s teaching culture is learner-centered, focusing on whole-child development whilst providing multicultural instruction and the use of visual, auditory and kinesthetic teaching strategies and tools ensuring we reach every learner.

Inclusive of the school fees, our enrichment program includes the following:

Junior Jive

Junior Jive Music and Movement program is an authentically South African Program where we focus on preparing the children for their future, by
developing cognitive, social and emotional skills, through the medium of music and movement.

Children learn through movement and enjoy music –that is why we use these two mediums as our learning tools, to develop children holistically.

We don’t only focus on music concepts and music knowledge, we also develop gross motor and fine motor skills, as well as other perceptual skills.

We do all this through creative play and exploration and have a LOT of fun every week!

Computers

Developing computational thinking in learners can be done from an early age and will help them make sense of and contribute to the society they will live in as adults.

ICT is part of modern education policies and we have improvised on the use of technology throughout the school. Each of our learners have their own laptop. Our littlies start on Ipads and move onto the laptops when competent.

Our school is also supplied by a solar system which allows us to continue with most of our daily tasks during load shedding. Each of our classrooms are equipped with a projector and board.

Each learner’s laptop is equipped with their Microsoft Account and state of the art software by Editmicro, a leading supplier of technology solutions
forging the way for technology to aid curriculum delivery.

The company is devoted to finding alternative and cutting-edge technology for learners of all abilities to improve curriculum delivery with a focus on high-speed
functional connectivity, on-going support and professional development.

Music and Arts

In addition to Sports and Extra Murals, music education helps prepare learners to think more creatively and learn how to work collaboratively. We also celebrate the learners who are truly passionate about the arts, and we strongly encourage them to pursue these talents.

We offer professional Music classes with a qualified music instructor who has been instrumental in teaching and providing enjoyment of Music to our learners over the many years. Our learners attend Music class at Craighall Primary School’s music room.

Visual and Performance Arts forms an integral part of the learner’s whole-child development. Arts is incorporated in the learner’s weekly timetable.

“Education isn’t just about feeding the brain. Art and music feed the heart and soul.” – Julie Garwood

Sport and Extra Murals

Our learners use Craighall Primary School’s many amenities and are included in Sports and Functions.

Most important is the fact that our children are included so readily in all these mainstream functions which makes our school different to all other remedial schools. It helps teach our children life skills and will help them all when returning to mainstream education.

Those children who play sport will have the skills required to do these sports when leaving our school.

Many of our learners are members of the Craighall teams and are doing very well; receiving full and half colours, medals and certificates of achievement and participation for Sports.

The sports include seasonal sports such as swimming, athletics, netball, and other non-competitive activities such as Fitness and Ball Skills, and other sport and physical activities.

Our termly calendar also includes our weekly Extra Murals for our learners focusing on skills development, and arts and performance which are strategically planned and hosted by our educators.
Some of our weekly extra murals include Cookery Club, Science Club, Computer Club, Drama Club, Art & Craft Club and more!

We also offer private extra murals through private company services, such as Pottery, Karate and Gymnastics.

Learner Support Unit

As a niche and well-established, private remedial school, our Learner Support unit ensures the remediation services we provide are professional,
supportive and in-line with the specific needs of our individual learners.

We provide concessions or accommodations for those learners who have either a medical condition or a barrier to learning that are impacting their
ability to perform optimally in their assessments and examinations.

In addition to the above, we incorporate Learner Support class sessions into our weekly timetable, which consists of a focused Skills period in which
our Learner Support teacher provides Skills development activities targeting current areas of development per phase, such as perceptual activities, learning and studying strategies and other enhancing programs to stimulate learning. In addition to the Skills period, our Learner Support teacher plans weekly Reading periods targeting receptive and expressive language skills, as well as phonetics and vocabulary development.

Other services offered at our school are Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy by our on-site therapists.

Working together, the teacher, therapist, parent and learner as a collegial approach is key to the child’s successes.

Assertive Discipline and Values of our School

Our Learner Code of Conduct aims to encourage and praise good behavior, setting safe and healthy boundaries for all, embracing the
values of the school and creating independent, confident and engaging young learners. Learners must be accountable for themselves, their schoolwork, homework and behavior.

We pride ourselves on the 7 Values of our School: Love, Unity, Perseverance, Honesty, Kindness, Respect and Responsibility.

We instill a strong ethos of moral education into our daily teaching by continuing to recognize each value and celebrating them in different ways. Values are caught as much as they are taught. They are why we do what we do and how we do them.

We encourage our parents to work with us by modelling these values to your children at home.

Aftercare

Our school includes the service of Aftercare, which offers half-day and full-day services. Both include lunch and care, as well as a Homework and Reading Class which is supervised by our educators.
